Create and upload your own document template

A step-by-step guide to uploading your own document examples and customising the template Lyrebird generates from them.

Uploading your own document examples is the best way to get Lyrebird writing in your exact style. Lyrebird analyses your uploaded documents to learn your preferred headings, structure, and tone - then uses that as the foundation for every document it generates.

Part 1: Create and upload your template

  1. Open the Document Templates tab

Go to CustomiseDocument Templates and click Create a new document template.

  2. Name your template

Give your template a name - this is what you'll see when selecting it during a consult. As you type, Lyrebird will suggest common template names to help you get started.

  3. Choose a document type

Select the document type that matches the structure you want. Hover over each option to see a description before choosing.

  4. Choose the intended recipients

Select who will be receiving this document. This helps Lyrebird understand the context and format the letter appropriately - for example, a referral letter reads differently to a patient-facing summary.

You can select multiple recipient types, or type a custom recipient and press Enter.

  5. Upload your example documents

Upload one or more examples of your own de-identified documents for Lyrebird to analyse. The more examples you provide, the better Lyrebird will understand your style - we generally recommend 2-5 examples.

For most accurate results, remove your clinic's letterhead and clinician details from the document. Upload only the main body of content - the section you want Lyrebird to replicate. Including headers or footers can interfere with how the template is structured.

  6. Generate your template
Once your examples are uploaded, click Generate template. Lyrebird will analyse your documents and create a starting template that mirrors your structure and style.

When it finishes, your new template opens in the editor - ready to review and fine-tune.

Part 2: Review and customise your template

The editor shows your customisation controls on the left and a live preview of the document on the right. Any change you make on the left updates the preview instantly.

Personalise Sections

Your template is divided into sections. Each section has four controls:

Headings

Rename a section heading by editing the textbox in the top-left of that section.
Use the Include heading toggle to control whether the heading appears in the final document.

Instructions

Add a standing instruction for each section to tell Lyrebird exactly what you want. Write instructions as if you're briefing a human medical scribe — be specific about what to include, exclude, or how to structure the content.

Set a fixed opening phrase

"Always start this section with: Thank you for your referral."

Add more detail on a specific topic

"Provide comprehensive detail around any physical examination performed, including all objective tests conducted."

Exclude certain information

"Never include imaging results or scans in this section."

Control the amount of detail - this is great if you want to control verbosity.

"This section should be a very short and concise 1–2 sentences."

Sentence structure

Choose how Lyrebird formats the content in each section. There are four options:

  • Paragraph - full sentences, like a standard letter.

  • Dot-points - key points listed in dot-point form, using concise language.

  • Dashes - same as dot-points, formatted with dashes instead.

  • Numbered - key points listed in ascending numbered form.

Length

Use the length control to adjust how much detail Lyrebird writes for each section. Choose from Shorter, Regular, or Longer.

Be sure to click "Save template" in the top right of the editor to track your changes.

Rearranging sections

Click and hold a section, drag it to the position you want, then release. It will slot into place automatically.

Removing a section

Click the trash icon in the top-right corner of a section to remove it. It will be marked as "This section has been hidden" and will no longer appear in generated documents.

Global Personalisation

This section determines rules which you would like Lyrebird to apply throughout the whole document.

This is where you can also enable Concise Language (avoiding superfluous language) and Bold Headings for each section.

Settings

This is where you can add additional context (this will reflect what you insert when you intially set up the document in Part 1)

Previewing your template

Select a saved patient consult from the top-right of the editor to see how your template applies to a real document. Your changes appear in the preview panel in real time.

If you don't have any saved consults yet, select Mock patient to preview using a sample document.
