Connecting a Microphone

Lyrebird needs to listen to you speak, so a good microphone is important.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Lyrebird works by listening to your consultation or dictation. The key to achieving comprehensive notes and dictations is to have a good microphone that picks up every part of the conversation.

What Microphone Works Best?

We've found success using the Audio-Technica ATR4697.

Why this microphone?

  • Omni-directional (picks up sound from all directions)

  • Works well during examinations (e.g. when the patient is on the examination bed)

If you can’t source this exact model, any long-distance omni-directional microphone should work well.

How to connect a microphone

To connect your microphone using Google Chrome:

  1. Connect your microphone to your device

  2. Open Google Chrome

  3. Go to the Lyrebird app (found here)

  4. When asked to allow Google Chrome to use your microphone, choose Allow

Fix problems with your microphone

The first quick fix is to make sure your microphone is securely plugged in. If it is, then try some of the options below.

Check your Google Chrome settings:

  1. Open Google Chrome

  2. At the top right, clickSettings

  3. Click Privacy and security Site settingsMicrophone

  4. Click on app.lyrebirdhealth.com, make sure the Microphone permission is set to "Allow"

Check your microphone works:

It is a good idea to test your microphone on another application. There are lots of options out there, if you simply search "Microphone Test" on Google Chrome, you'll find websites which can help you diagnose whether the microphone is working as expected.

Restart your computer:

A simple restart may get your microphone working again.

Check your systems microphone settings:

Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input. Click the name (e.g MacBook Pro Microphone) of your built-in mic to make sure it's turned on.

If Lyrebird Cannot Detect Your Microphone

This is usually caused by microphone permissions not being granted.

The first time you open Lyrebird, you should see a microphone access prompt. Please ensure you click “Allow.”

If you previously blocked access - or no prompt appears - follow the reset steps below.

Reset Microphone Permissions

  1. Close Best Practice completely

  2. Click the Windows icon (bottom left) and search for Run

  3. Open Run and type:

    %APPDATA%

    then click OK

  4. In the file path at the top, click AppData

  5. Open the Local folder

  6. Navigate to:

    Best Practice > EBWebView

  7. Delete %localappdata%\\Best Practice\\EBWebView inside the “Best Practice” folder

  8. Reopen Best Practice

  9. Open a test patient file

  10. Open Lyrebird - the microphone permission prompt should appear again

Click Allow, and you’re ready to go.

Using Lyrebird in Remote Desktop (RDP)

If Lyrebird opens but cannot detect your microphone and you are using Remote Desktop, the issue may be related to audio redirection settings.

First, confirm if the microphone works outside of Best Practice by testing on Zoom or Voice Recorder. If it doesn’t work there, the issue is likely device-related rather than Lyrebird.

Next, check Microphone Redirection in Remote Desktop

  1. Open Remote Desktop Connection

  2. Click Show Options

  3. Go to Local Resources

  4. Click Remote Audio > Settings

  5. Ensure “Record from this computer” is selected

  6. Reconnect your session

If multiple people in your clinic are affected, ask your IT team to check:

  • Group Policy → Allow audio recording redirection (should be enabled)

  • Terminal server permissions allow audio redirection
