Starting Your First Consult

A step-by-step walkthrough of running your first consult in Lyrebird, from entering patient details to copying your finished note.

This guide walks you through running your very first consult in Lyrebird, from entering patient details through to generating your notes and moving on to your next patient.

What does this do?

The Consult page listens in the background of your consultation and converts the conversation into a clinical note. Once you stop listening, Lyrebird generates a transcript and a note you can review, edit and copy into your patient record.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Enter patient details

    1. On the Consult tab, enter the patient's name and sex.

    2. Confirm your note template and note type are set correctly for this consult.

  2. Start the consult

    1. Before starting, check that the correct microphone is selected below Start Listening — this should be the mic connected to your computer or device.

    2. If this is a telehealth appointment, tick Telehealth consult.

    3. Click Start Listening to begin.

  3. During the consult

    1. Use the notepad to add any notes that aren't verbalised during the conversation.

    2. In the top right, you'll see the sound wave animation, a running consult timer, and the microphone currently in use.

    3. If you need to step out, take a call, or the patient asks not to be recorded, click Pause. You can resume from the same screen when you're ready.

    4. When the consult is finished, click Stop Listening.

  4. Review your notes

    1. Lyrebird generates a transcript and a consult note, including consult time, presenting problems, and the treatment plan.

    2. To request an edit, type an instruction in the box at the bottom of the note (for example, "more concise") and click the up arrow. Lyrebird will rewrite the note based on your instruction.

    3. Use the tabs to switch between the generated note, the transcript, and your notepad at any time.

  5. Finish and move on

    1. Once you're happy with the note, click Copy and paste it into your patient record.

    2. Click Next Patient to return to the Consult page and begin your next consultation.

Tips for Best Results

  • Double-check your microphone selection before every consult, especially if you've switched devices.

  • Tick Telehealth consult whenever the appointment isn't in person, so Lyrebird captures it correctly.

  • Keep edit instructions short and specific ("more concise", "add allergies") for the most accurate rewrite.

  • Use Pause rather than Stop Listening for short interruptions, since stopping generates the note straight away.

  • Always confirm patient consent before starting the recording.
