What is Dictate?
Dictate is Lyrebird's second recording mode. Instead of listening to a live conversation between you and a patient, Dictate listens to you speaking directly and turns your words into a formatted note or document.
Use Dictate when you:
Want to document after the patient has left
Prefer to narrate your notes verbally rather than type
Need to produce a specific document like a referral letter or care plan without a full consultation recording
The three Dictate modes
Smart Dictate
Lyrebird acts like a conversational scribe. You speak naturally and freely, and Lyrebird formats your words into a clean, structured note based on your selected template.
You do not need to dictate in any specific format or order. Speak the way you think and Lyrebird will handle the structure.
Best for: Post-consult note documentation, summarising a patient encounter in your own words.
Direct Dictate
Lyrebird transcribes your words exactly as you speak them, with only basic punctuation and paragraph formatting applied.
Best for: When you want precise control over the wording of a note and do not want any interpretation or restructuring by Lyrebird.
Dictate Documents
Lyrebird formats your dictation into the structure of a selected document template, such as a referral letter, care plan, or specialist report.
Best for: Producing structured documents like referral letters, MHCP plans, or discharge summaries.

Lyrebird will generate your note or document within a few seconds of pressing Stop.
Tips for better dictation results
Speak at a normal pace. You do not need to slow down or over-enunciate. Lyrebird handles natural speech well.
State structure for Direct Dictate. If you are using Direct Dictate and want paragraph breaks, say "new paragraph" as you speak. For lists, say each item clearly with a brief pause between them.
Name the sections for Smart Dictate. While not required, saying "the plan is..." or "assessment..." helps Lyrebird place content correctly in the right template sections.
Minimise background noise. Close doors, turn off TV or radio, and reduce ambient noise as much as possible for the clearest transcript.
Reviewing and editing a dictated note
Once generated, your dictated note appears exactly like a note from a live consult. You can edit the text directly by clicking into the note, or use AI Edit to make targeted changes using plain language instructions.
Sending dictated documents back to your EMR
Documents you create with Dictate during a consultation launched from your EMR can be sent directly back to that system, so there is no need to copy the content across manually. This keeps your patient records up to date automatically and reduces transcription errors.
Please note: This feature is currently available to users in the UK only. You must have a supported EMR integration and launch your consultation from that EMR to use it.
1. Launch a consultation from your EMR
From your supported EMR, select the patient and choose the option to launch a Lyrebird consultation. This creates a direct connection between Lyrebird and your EMR for that session.
2. Create or dictate your document
During the consultation, create your document using Dictate. Review your content to make sure it is accurate and complete before proceeding.
3. Review the document content
Once the document is drafted, review all fields and content on screen and make any final edits.
4. Send the document back to your EMR
Click the Send to EMR button or similar option (the exact label may vary depending on your EMR). The document is transmitted directly to your EMR and a confirmation message appears once it has been sent.
5. Confirm the document is saved in your EMR
Return to your EMR to verify the document has appeared in the patient's record. It should be immediately available for review, signing, or further action as required by your workflow.
Tips for best results
Check that your EMR is on Lyrebird's supported integrations list before using the feature.
Double-check document content before sending — some EMRs lock documents once received for audit compliance.
Confirm the document appears in your EMR within a few seconds of sending; if it doesn't arrive, check your internet connection and EMR permissions.
Some EMRs require specific field mappings or additional setup — contact your EMR vendor if the send-back option isn't appearing.
The send-back feature works with all of Lyrebird's document creation methods: live dictation, transcription, and manual composition.
