Lyrebird Health has five main pages:
Consult | Dictate | History | Customise | Settings
The Consult page helps you generate your notes so you can focus your time and attention on your patient. This feature allows Lyrebird listens in the background of your consultation with the patient, converting the conversation into your clinical notes.
Once you stop the recording, you can view your notes and create any letters and assessments you need.
Below is a 2-minute overview on everything you need to know before getting started!
Before you start
Make sure you have:
A microphone connected and tested
Obtained patient consent
If you have not connected your microphone yet, see Connecting a microphone before continuing.
Approaching consent
Patient consent is required for all consults with a patient.
Consent information printouts:
Example script to obtain patient consent
"Please confirm that you are comfortable with me taking an audio recording of your consultation for the purposes of preparing a note of the consultation, which is reviewed and stored for inclusion in your medical record."
Step 1: Open a new consult
Log in to Lyrebird at app.lyrebirdhealth.com and click Consult from the main navigation.
Step 2: Select your consult settings
Before recording starts, Lyrebird will ask you to confirm three settings.
1. Note template
Select the note template you want Lyrebird to use for this consult.
Your default template will be pre-selected (change your default on the Customise page). You can change this at any time before or during the consult.
2. Consult type
Choose between Initial Consult and Review Consult.
The selected type will affect the structure and depth of the note, and the information Lyrebird will prioritise.
Consult type | When to use it |
Initial Consult | New patient, new problem, or any time you want a full history captured |
Review Consult | Follow-up for an existing problem. Lyrebird focuses on changes since the last visit |
Please note, if you incorrectly select Initial Consult for a follow-up, you may get a note that is longer than necessary. A Review Consult for a new problem may miss important history.
You can change the default consult type in the Customise page.
3. Visit type
Choose In-person or Telehealth. This helps Lyrebird contextualise how the consultation was conducted.
Ticking Telehealth will allow you to pick up system audio for any video call consultations carried out on your device.
Step 3: Start recording
Click Start Consult. Lyrebird will request microphone access if it has not been granted already. Click Allow.
You will see the audio level indicator move as you and your patient speak. This confirms Lyrebird is listening.
💡 Tip: Consult naturally with your patient. You do not need to change how you speak, slow down, or avoid abbreviations. Lyrebird is designed to handle natural clinical conversation.
Step 4: Use the Notepad (optional)
The Notepad is visible on screen during the consult. Any text you type here will be incorporated into the generated note. For more information about the Consult notepad, see our article: Using the Consult Notepad
Use the Notepad to:
Add information you do not want to say aloud in front of the patient
Note a medication dose you want included but did not state verbally
Flag something for the plan that came up before the patient entered the room
💡 Tip: Enable the Show notepad pre-consult setting to make the notepad available to add any contextual notes prior to the actual visit with the patient starting.
Step 5: Pause and resume if needed
Click Pause at any time to stop Lyrebird from listening temporarily. Click Resume to continue recording.
Use Pause when:
The patient is undressing
You step out of the room briefly
A phone call or interruption occurs
Pausing does not affect the note. Lyrebird will continue from where you left off when you Resume.
If there will be a large break between pausing and resuming a consult, and you need to see someone in between, simply Stop Recording as it can always be resumed/reaccessed from the History page.
If you are unsure whether Pausing or Stopping the consultation is suitable, always hit Stop.
Step 6: Stop the consult and generate the note
When the consultation ends, click Stop. Lyrebird will process the recording and generate your note within a few seconds.
If the patient raises something new after you have pressed Stop, wait for the note to generate, and then click Resume Consult in the top right to restart recording. The new content will be incorporated into the existing note.
Step 7: Review and edit the note
Always review the generated note before saving it to your EMR or patient file. This typically takes under 60 seconds.
Common things to check:
Patient name and medications spelled correctly
Nothing captured from background conversation
Plan section reflects your clinical decisions accurately
To make changes, you can:
Edit manually by clicking directly into the note text
Use AI Edit to describe a change in plain language and have Lyrebird rewrite the relevant section
Step 8: Save to your note to your EMR
Once you are satisfied with the note, copy it to your electronic medical record (EMR) or use an integration to push it directly to the patient file.
If you are using the Bp Premier, Gentu, or Genie, see the relevant guide for push instructions.
Starting a consult with shortcuts
Shortcuts are specific keyboard letters that trigger specific actions or commands. Navigate around Lyrebird using shortcuts for quick and efficient use.
Type patients name → tab → F (Female) / M (Male) / N (Neutral) → I (Initial consult) / R (Review consult) → return (confirm consent)
Something went wrong?
