Recording a consult in Best Practice

Open Lyrebird from a patient file and use the Best Practice tabs during a consult.

Open Lyrebird from the patient's file in Bp and it fills in their details, so you can start recording straight away. Recording works the same as in the web app. This article covers what's different in Best Practice.

Applies to: All plans · Best Practice only

Open Lyrebird from the patient file

  1. Start the patient visit from the appointment book, or open the record with the filing cabinet button.

  2. Click the L button on the toolbar. The Lyrebird Scribe window opens.

  3. Check the patient's name and sex, which Lyrebird fills in from Bp.

  4. Choose your template and settings as usual. See How do I use Lyrebird for a consult?

Lyrebird Health Logo inside Bp

Use one Lyrebird window per patient

Each Lyrebird window stays linked to the patient you opened it from. Opening another patient in Bp doesn't update it.

  1. Finish and save the consult.

  2. Close the Lyrebird window and the patient file.

  3. Open Lyrebird from the next patient's file.

🛑 Important

Before you record or save, check the name in Lyrebird matches the patient open in Bp. This also keeps Lyrebird running quickly.

Check MBS care prompts

Before you start, Lyrebird shows MBS care prompts above the consent button: care items this patient may be eligible for, such as a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (965) or a 75+ Health Assessment. Lyrebird checks the patient's Bp file, billing and medical history to suggest them.

  • Hover over the info icon to see the eligibility checks and where each came from.

  • Prompts are a reminder only. You can't click them before the consult. Once recording, start them from the Eligible MBS tab.

ℹ️ Good to know

Prompts are a guide. You confirm eligibility before billing. See MBS billing in Lyrebird.

Record the consult

Get the patient's consent, then click I have obtained consent, start listening. Pause, stop and resume work as in How do I use Lyrebird for a consult?

Consult

  1. From the patient record, click the Lyrebird Health icon on the toolbar. The Lyrebird Health browser will appear.

  3. Select your preferred Note type:

    • SOAP: follows the Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan structure.

    • Chief Complaint: includes multiple sections; chief complaint, systems review, medications, and planning.

    • Multiple Complaints: same as the chief complaint but will include more detail for secondary complaints.

    • Your custom notes will also appear in this list, you can create a custom note in the Customise tab.

Description

Initial Consult

Lyrebird will emphasise the history of any issues, particularly subjective information

💡TIP: We recommend selecting Initial Consult when treating a new problem; this ensures that the most information is captured to get the best possible notes.

Review Consult

Lyrebird will concentrate less on the history and more on any changes in presentation from the previous consultation.

5. Obtain the patient's Consent to generate clinical notes using Lyrebird's Consult Transcription service. Consent is now built into the Start listening button. Once you have obtained the patient’s consent, click I have obtained consent, start listening to begin. Read more about consent here.

I have obtained consent, start listening

Lyrebird will capture and record the patient's consent in the transcribed clinical notes.

When the transcribed clinical notes are saved from Lyrebird to Bp Premier, the patient's consent will be recorded in Today's notes.

To skip consent for patients who have already agreed, turn on Remember patients in Best Practice who "always consent" in Settings. It's off by default.

While recording a consult

  1. The Lyrebird Health browser may prompt you for permission to use your microphone; click Allow.
If you see No speech detected. Please check your microphone settings, Lyrebird isn't receiving audio. See Lyrebird can't hear me.

  2. Lyrebird will Start listening to and transcribing the patient consultation. A recording timer will now appear next to the Pause and Stop buttons to show that recording has started.

  3. Additional information about the patient can be freely typed in the Notepad textbox; for example, you could include information you do not want to verbalise to the patient. All free typed information will be recorded in the notes at the end of the consultation.

  4. To pause Lyrebird during the consultation, click Pause; Lyrebird will stop listening. When you are ready to continue, click Resume; Lyrebird will resume listening.

  5. When you have completed the consultation, click Stop. Lyrebird will immediately begin transcribing your notes.

  6. If you need to Edit your notes, you can do so directly on Lyrebird Health, before saving to Bp. You can edit manually, or using our AI Edit feature.

  8. Choose the Note template type from the options provided and click Generate.
Lyrebird will regenerate the clinical notes based on the Note template type you have selected. To view past and newly generated clinical notes, click on the relevant Note tab.

    Note generation options
  9. To save your consult notes to Lyrebird, click Save to Bp. This sends the note to the patient's file in Bp Premier and saves it to Lyrebird at the same time. You can view Saved consults in the History tab, stored under the patient’s name.

Save your consult notes to Lyrebird button
  10. Has the patient raised another concern after Lyrebird has finished transcribing the clinical notes? Click Resume Consult; Lyrebird will start listening and generate the clinical notes to incorporate the additional information.

    Resume consult button

ℹ️ Consultation documents generated by Lyrebird must be manually copied from the Lyrebird Health browser and pasted into a word processor document or template in Bp Premier. To avoid this, we recommend setting up your letterhead on Best Practice to enable direct saving.

  11. Before sending your consult notes to Bp Premier, click the drop down next to the Save to Bp button and you will see the option to Add observations. Here you can add and edit any observations before sending to Bp.

Add and Edit observations before sending to Bp

ℹ️ If clinical observations are detected during the consultation, Lyrebird automatically adds them to the Add and Edit Observations before Sending to Bp screen. Auto-populated observations should always be reviewed for accuracy before saving to Bp Premier. If no observations are detected, you can enter them manually on the same screen. Observations are saved to Bp Premier as atomised values, which can be graphed to give you insight into a patient's trends over time.

  12. The notes from Lyrebird will be recorded in Today's notes section of the patient record.

  13. When clinical notes are saved from Lyrebird to Bp Premier, a statement confirming that the transcribed clinical notes were created using Lyrebird Health and that the clinician has reviewed them will be included.

See the Patient Summary

The Patient Summary tab, next to Notepad, shows a read-only summary from Bp: name and age, medications, allergies, active medical history, family history and social history.

You can choose which tab opens first with Default Consult Tab in Customise → General.
