Lyrebird works inside Best Practice (Bp Premier), so you can record, write and save notes from the patient file. Your practice turns the integration on once, then each clinician links their own Lyrebird account.
Applies to: All plans · Best Practice only · Australia
What the integration does
Lyrebird opens from the patient file in a window called Lyrebird Scribe. It adds these Best Practice features to the web app:
The patient's name and sex are filled in for you. See Recording a consult in Best Practice.
Your note saves to Today's notes and observations save to the patient's observations. See Saving your note to Best Practice.
Letters are written on your practice letterhead and saved to Correspondence Out. See Letters on your Bp letterhead.
You can approve PBS authority scripts without leaving the consult. See Approving PBS Authority Scripts.
ℹ️ Good to know
Everything else, such as templates, AI edit and documents, works the same as in the web app. See How do I use Lyrebird for a consult?
Turn on the integration for your practice
ℹ️ Before you start
This is done once per practice by your practice manager or Bp administrator. You need Best Practice Orchid SP2 or later. To update, see Best Practice's install and upgrade guide.
In Bp, go to Setup → Configuration.
Select Database, then Setup third-party integrations.
Tick Lyrebird Health (via Halo Connect), then click Close.
The L button now appears on the toolbar when you start a patient visit.
Create & Link your Lyrebird account
Each clinician does this once. Linking lets Lyrebird log you in automatically and write back to the patient file.
If you are new to Lyrebird and haven't made an account before:
Open a test patient record on Best Practice
Click on the L button
Follow the prompts to register your account
By the end of this process, your account will be automatically integrated using our one-touch sign on process!
If you have used Lyrebird before or have made an account on the browser:
If you have used Lyrebird previously, or if you created an account on the web browser rather than through Bp directly, you'll need to sync up your API key with Best Practice to finalise the link between the accounts.
Open Lyrebird in Bp and go to Settings → Integrations.
Ensure Bp is selected as your integration, then copy your Bp Account Key.
In Bp, go to Setup → Users and select your user.
Click Lyrebird Scribe in the bottom right corner.
Paste your key and click Save.
Keep your Bp Account Key private, as it links Bp to your Lyrebird account. Also note, you can only integrate one account per clinic. If you work at multiple clinics using Best Practice, you will need a separate Lyrebird account for each one.
Bp Free
When you link your account, you move onto Bp Free automatically. To keep it, log in to Lyrebird through Bp rather than the standalone web app.
Feature | Bp Free allowance |
Notes and Standard Dictate | Unlimited |
AI Edit, Smart Dictate and Documents | 10 actions a month in total, reset on the 1st of each month |
Workflows (care plans and health assessments) | 20 actions in total, one time only |
Document sharing and community-shared templates | Included |
Pro removes these limits. See What is Bp Free?, Plans and actions and Managing your subscription.
Allow Lyrebird to use your microphone
The first time you open Lyrebird in Bp, click Allow when asked for microphone access. Recent Bp versions allow it automatically.
If you blocked it, or no prompt appears, reset the permission:
Close Lyrebird and Best Practice completely.
Press Windows + R, type %APPDATA% and click OK.
In the file path at the top of the window, click AppData.
Open the Local folder, then the Best Practice folder.
Delete the folder named EBWebView. It only holds temporary files, and Best Practice creates it again.
Reopen Best Practice, open a patient file and open Lyrebird.
Click Allow when the prompt appears.
Using a remote desktop or Amazon WorkSpaces
On a remote desktop, your microphone is passed through from your own computer, so it may show with a name like Default - Microphone (AWS Virtual…). That's normal: select it.
If Lyrebird hears nothing:
Test the microphone in another app on the remote desktop. If it fails there too, the issue is the remote connection.
For Windows Remote Desktop: open Remote Desktop Connection, click Show Options → Local Resources → Remote Audio → Settings, select Record from this computer and reconnect.
For Citrix, Amazon WorkSpaces and other remote setups, ask your IT provider to turn on microphone (audio input) redirection.
Best Practice also has a guide to using Lyrebird on a terminal or remote server.
Keep Lyrebird fast
Use one Lyrebird window per patient. Close it, and the patient file, when you've saved.
Keep no more than 3 to 5 patient files open.
Restart Bp at least once a day.
